The image, which circulated widely on social media, prompted opposition figures to accuse him of being out of touch with ordinary people struggling through the crisis.

Macron's holiday snapshot drew immediate comparisons to Marie Antoinette's famous remark about cake, with some commentators suggesting the president was showing a similar disregard for the suffering of his citizens. This is not the first time Macron has been accused of tone-deafness.
