An initial investigation into a head-on crash on Teesside found that a police pursuit had been aborted just seconds before the collision. Two Cleveland police officers, PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough, died when their armed response vehicle collided with an oncoming Volkswagen Passat carrying five young men, aged 17 to 23, all of whom also died. The Passat had been pursued for just under seven minutes before heading onto the A66 against the flow of traffic, at which point the pursuit was abandoned; the fatal collision occurred about ten seconds later. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the seven deaths, and tributes were paid by the community and the family of PC Clough.
