What was reported
A plain summary of this topic, built from the channels that covered it.
ITV1 and Channel 4 reported that a school roof collapsed in Peshawar, Pakistan, killing pupils and a teacher. Channel 4 put the death toll at at least 27 pupils and a teacher. ITV1 gave differing figures during its bulletin: its introduction referred to at least 34 children and a teacher after the roofs of two school classrooms collapsed, while its correspondent reported at least 30 children and one teacher were killed when the roof caved in during the first class of the day. Both channels said police feared the death toll could rise. Channel 4 reported that 110 children were in three classrooms when the roof gave way, fewer than half had been rescued, and 20 more pupils were injured. ITV1 reported more than 100 pupils were in the affected classrooms, more than 50 people were injured, many critically, and more than 40 children were pulled out alive. ITV1 also reported that heavy rainfall overnight was said to have contributed to the collapse of the three-storey private school, that a police officer said substandard materials were used, that the owner had been arrested, and that Pakistan's president said the nation shared the grief of the affected families. ITV1 added that construction standards are poorly enforced in Pakistan and deadly structure collapses are common.
