Newscast

The broadcast began with the film Artificial, about OpenAI's Sam Altman and Ilya Sutskever, and framed the AI debate around whether to race ahead or slow down. It reported that, in the week Ukraine attacked Russia's data centres, the UK's AI minister warned that AI-assisted cyber attacks could breach cyber defences, while the head of MI5 said terrorists were seeking to exploit AI and highlighted AI's potential to change the stakes on bioweapons.

Verified Live

The first story concerned a major security flaw in PHP, a programming language used behind much of the internet. Around 70% of the internet could be affected, and the UK government said 32 of its services were unavailable while four were partially unavailable; Wikipedia, Amazon, WordPress and some BBC sites reported issues. Researchers had found the flaw using AI, but details leaked and tech firms warned hackers were already trying to exploit it. The US National Security Agency issued a warning, and the UK's National Cyber Security Centre said organisations should prepare for a surge in such alerts.

BBC News Now

Governments and organisations worldwide scrambled to protect websites after a major security flaw in the PHP programming language, which runs much of the internet; up to 30 million sites were affected, the US National Security Agency urged affected organisations to take systems offline while a fix was found, and Downing Street said limited government services might be temporarily offline. Barclays said it would cut 5,000 jobs worldwide as it increased its reliance on AI, with the bulk expected in UK retail banking and a significant share of back-office roles from places such as India, as part of a drive to save more than £1 billion.

BBC News

The broadcast led with a Russian missile attack on Kyiv, which Mayor Vitali Klitschko said injured multiple people and hit homes and a petrol station; the latest figure given was 15 wounded, with a medical centre struck and six ambulances damaged, and reports of explosions in Kharkiv and Dnipro. It said the strikes came just as Donald Trump said a deal to end the war may be closer than ever and after Russia said it was ready to resume peace talks, while Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff presented Vladimir Putin with a fresh ceasefire plan in Moscow after meeting Volodymyr Zelensky. A correspondent said a woman was killed and four injured further east, and reported that Ukrainians wanted talks but were sceptical of Russia's honesty and motives, while intelligence and Starshield communications were said to be part of the discussions. The US ordered non-essential staff and families to leave its embassy in Saudi Arabia amid almost daily attacks by Iran-backed Houthi fighters; an attack on King Fahd Airport in Dammam killed one person and injured eight with responsibility unclear, while Saudi air defences intercepted a drone in an attempted attack on an oil field and two people were killed.
