The European Union will hold emergency talks on Tuesday following a surge of migrants into the Spanish territory of Ceuta from Morocco. Approximately 60,000 people crossed the border in a short period, with most subsequently returning to Morocco either voluntarily or through Spanish authorities. At least 67 to 72 people died, many by drowning. The incident has caused political tensions within the EU, with Italy suspending the Schengen border-free agreement with Spain for a month. Spain's prime minister criticized what he called the selfish attitude of some EU members. Some migrants reported that Moroccan police waved them through, though the role of Moroccan authorities remains disputed. Spain has deployed military and police and installed a floating barrier to prevent further crossings. A far-right demonstration in Ceuta was met by counter-protesters, and the far-right activist Alvise Pérez was forced to leave under police protection.
