The families of two police officers killed in a head-on crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough have paid tribute to them. PC Matthew Blades's wife said the pain of losing him is beyond words, and PC Tom Clough's family described him as a hero. An online appeal raised more than £200,000 in under 12 hours. The officers died after a car being driven the wrong way struck them; the five young men in that car also died and were named today. Police say the pursuit was called off 10 seconds before the crash.

The police watchdog confirmed that the pursuit of the car carrying the young men was abandoned shortly before the collision. Separately, it was reported that hackers linked to Iran were responsible for a cyber attack that shut down a small British power plant for four days, though the government said there was no risk to the wider energy system.

Investigations are ongoing into a crash near Middlesbrough in which seven people died, including two police officers. Officers Matthew Blades and Tom Clough were killed after their police vehicle collided with a car travelling the wrong way down a dual carriageway, and the five occupants of that car, identified locally as teenage boys, also died. Seaton Carew Football Club, where Blades coached, paid tribute, and the independent police watchdog is carrying out its own investigation. CCTV showed a car speeding before the crash, though the police car involved was not part of the pursuit.
