What was reported

A plain summary of this topic, built from the channels that covered it.

Two UK news channels reported on new figures showing a record number of referrals to the government's anti-extremism scheme, Prevent, in the year to September 2025. Sky News reported 10,293 referrals, a 39% increase on the previous year, the highest since records began in 2015. BBC One West reported almost 10,000 referrals, a 37% increase, also the highest since 2015. Both channels noted that the largest proportion of referrals were for 11 to 15 year olds. Sky News stated that 393 referrals were for children aged 10 or younger; BBC One West said almost 400 were under 11. BBC One West provided additional breakdowns: around a third of referrals came from educational establishments, and the increase was partly attributed to the Southport attack. It also reported that more than half of referrals were not linked to any ideology, around a fifth were linked to right-wing extremism, less than a tenth to Islamist extremism, and almost 500 cases involved people fascinated by extreme violence or mass attacks. More than a third of those referred had mental health issues or neurodiversity, and around two thirds were white. Sky News did not include these breakdowns.
