The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.

Matilda the Musical has marked 15 years in London's West End. The show, based on Roald Dahl's novel, has been seen by more than 13 million people worldwide since its premiere in Stratford-upon-Avon.

It began life as the Royal Shakespeare Company's Christmas show. It opened at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on 9 November 2010. Those involved in the original production said they hoped it might reach the West End, but did not expect it to run for so long. Footage from the Stratford show was included in the anniversary report.

Early demand in Stratford built quickly. Previews had ticket discounts and seating gaps at first, but by the end of the run tickets were being sold on eBay for hundreds of pounds. The production moved to London and became one of the biggest shows of the 21st century, according to the report.

Catherine Fackman and Alan Smith, two members of the RSC's costume team, helped create the original dress worn by Miss Trunchbull. They described building the body underneath the outfit before the dress could be made, and said the sleeves got bigger and bigger.

The creative team also recalled the first response to the songs. One songwriter said there had been doubts about whether audiences would like the first seven or eight songs because they did not sound like most musicals. The reaction after Naughty on the first night was much stronger than expected.

The report said the show's themes remain universal and timeless. It highlighted messages about standing up for what is right, being brave, reading and stories as freedom, family being where you find it, love conquering all, and little girls being powerful.
