Burnham returns from UN after warm Trump talks and Russia row
Andy Burnham has returned from his first UN General Assembly, where he met Donald Trump, accused Russia of election interference and saw the Chagos deal thrown into doubt.
The Full Story
A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.
Andy Burnham has returned to the UK after his first UN General Assembly as Prime Minister, a trip that mixed warm first talks with Donald Trump, a blunt attack on Russian disinformation, and fresh uncertainty over the Chagos Islands.
The central event was Burnham's first face-to-face meeting with Trump, held on the sidelines of the UN gathering in New York. It was due to last about half an hour but ran longer, with delegations on both sides. Trump praised Burnham as a natural business person and said he got it, adding that relations with the UK were more up than under the previous prime minister. Burnham said the two men had established a good connection and found common ground on the cost of living, the Middle East and the need to stop Iran becoming a nuclear power. They also discussed Ukraine, trade, the Falklands, North Sea drilling and the Chagos Islands.
The Chagos Islands became the clearest point of tension. Trump said he did not support the UK plan to hand sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius and lease back the Diego Garcia base, calling it terrible and ridiculous. Burnham said he had inherited the situation and that a resolution was needed to safeguard the base, which is strategically important to both the UK and the US. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting later said the deal was not good enough without American support. Payments to Mauritius were reported to have been paused.
On the Falklands, Burnham said he had told Trump directly that the UK would stand firm against any threats and would defend the right of Falkland Islanders to self-determination and to remain British. Trump was said to have understood the position. The meeting also covered trade and tariffs. Burnham said he raised a specific factory case in the north east and spoke about reindustrialisation. Trump invited Burnham to play golf, while Burnham said Trump was always welcome in the UK.
In his UN address, Burnham made artificial intelligence the centrepiece. He called for a single set of global principles and standards to ensure transparency, access and safety, and announced a new AI defence partnership with the United States to protect critical national infrastructure. He said decisions on AI were too important to be left to chance and should be taken by elected governments. Trump used his own UN speech to reject globalist controls on AI and to say the US would encourage what he called superintelligence instead of artificial intelligence.
Burnham also announced a new National Centre for Information Defence, tasked with detecting, attributing and disrupting hostile state information attacks. He accused Russian agencies of an industrial-scale assault on the information environment, saying they spent about £1.3bn a year on manipulating information, used bots, fake websites and falsified newspaper articles, forged the branding of British organisations, amplified far-right narratives and tried to interfere in the 2019 general election. The Kremlin rejected the allegations. Dmitry Peskov said Burnham had said nothing new and accused Britain of stoking anti-Russian sentiment.
Before the UN speech, the UK announced it would provide limited military support to Saudi Arabia in its fight against Iran-backed Houthi rebels. An RAF Voyager based at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus will refuel Saudi fighter jets for a few weeks. Ministers described the support as defensive and time-limited, aimed at helping Saudi Arabia shoot down drones and missiles and keep the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz open. Analysts said the military impact was likely to be limited, but the gesture was politically important.
Trump used the UN platform to defend his war with Iran and threaten to annihilate the Islamic Republic if no deal was reached. He also said the war between Russia and Ukraine could end sooner than people expect, attacked the United Nations, and prompted a walkout by Cuba's delegation after saying Cuba's communist regime would fall. The US and Denmark signed a security deal over Greenland. Trump's feud with US media also escalated, with CNN, MS Now and Politico banned from White House coverage and other networks suspending pooled coverage in protest.
Burnham also met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. He said AI would be at the heart of the UK's G20 presidency next year, which will be hosted in Manchester. Back home, the trip took place against a tough economic backdrop, with government borrowing in August higher than expected and pressure on the Chancellor before the Budget.

Channel Perspectives
What each channel focused on, with key quotes.
Sky led on the personal chemistry between Burnham and Trump and the diplomatic risks around Chagos and the Falklands. It carried extensive preview and analysis from Beth Rigby and Mark Stone, plus the Prime Minister's own words on AI, Russia disinformation and Saudi support. Its tone was cautious but broadly positive about Burnham avoiding a blow-up.
- “I think he's a natural business person.”
- “we will stand firm in the face of any threats, we will defend the right of the Falkland Islanders to self-determination and to remain British”
- “The Kremlin spends around 1.3 billion pounds each year on manipulating information.”
BBC News treated the story as both a foreign policy test and a domestic political moment. It foregrounded the Russia disinformation allegations, the new information defence centre and the AI principles, while also reporting the Trump meeting and the Chagos review. Its tone was explanatory and institution-focused.
- “Russian agencies have used every means at their disposal to spread lies and disinformation and prey on people's fears.”
- “We have evidence that they tried to interfere with the 2019 general election.”
- “We will work towards agreeing a single set of global principles and standards”
BBC ONE West's bulletins combined national diplomacy with regional news. They covered the Trump meeting, the UN speech and the Chagos review, but also gave space to domestic stories such as borrowing figures and local issues. The tone was straight news, with some analysis of Burnham's limited foreign policy experience.
- “Andy Burnham has had his first face-to-face meeting with President Trump since becoming Prime Minister”
- “Russian agencies have used every means at their disposal to spread lies and disinformation and prey on people's fears.”
- “Today I am asking our security chiefs in the UK to begin work on a new national centre for information defence.”
ITV1 focused on the high stakes and personal chemistry of the Trump meeting, framing it as a survival test for Burnham. It highlighted Trump's praise, the Chagos deal being put on hold, the Russia disinformation attack and the Saudi refuelling decision. Its tone was brisk and slightly sceptical about how long the goodwill would last.
- “they're more up now than they were with the last Prime Minister”
- “Russian agencies have used every means at their disposal to spread lies and disinformation and prey on people's fears.”
- “I don't support it. I think it's terrible. It was a terrible deal.”
BBC TWO's Newsnight and Politics Live treated the story as a testing ground for Burnham's foreign policy and for the AI regulation debate. It gave more room to panels, critical voices and questions about sovereignty, disinformation powers and whether Britain can influence Trump. The tone was analytical and sometimes sceptical.
- “We have evidence that they tried to interfere with the 2019 general election.”
- “The Kremlin spends around 1.3 billion pounds each year on manipulating information.”
- “This is not Andy Burnham's first foreign trip as Prime Minister.”
GB News was more critical of Burnham, questioning his disinformation centre as a possible ministry of truth and highlighting Chagos, Saudi military support and concerns about free speech. It also covered the Trump meeting but focused on awkwardness and the risk that Burnham looked uncomfortable. Its tone was sceptical and opinionated.
- “I don't support it I think it's terrible. It was a terrible deal.”
- “Andy Burnham looked deeply deeply uncomfortable as if he didn't really want to be there”
- “The danger of government deciding what is acceptable and what is not, I think is very clear.”
Channel 4 framed the day as geopolitical theatre, contrasting Trump's threats and media battles with Burnham's quieter diplomacy. It gave strong coverage to the Russia disinformation speech, the Chagos review and the limits of UK influence. Its tone was wry and analytical.
- “Andy Burnham and Donald Trump make nice for the cameras. Is this the beginning of a beautiful friendship?”
- “I have a big decision to make. Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before?”
- “The Kremlin spends around £1.3bn each year on manipulating information.”
5 focused on the main political headlines around the UN trip: Burnham's first meeting with Trump, the Russia disinformation speech, the Chagos review and the Saudi military support. Its tone was concise and centrist, with less panel analysis than some channels.
- “He says he will try to find, as he puts it, common ground with Mr Trump.”
- “Russian agencies have used every means at their disposal to spread lies and disinformation and prey on people's fears.”
- “The UK is to review its deal to give the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after criticism by President Trump.”
