The operation began with Brandon under general anaesthetic. After five hours, the tumour was cut free from his body, weighing 7kg, and the surgeons confirmed they had not left any tumour behind. They had to take the shoulder blade and part of the collarbone away.
Plastic surgeons then took over for nearly six more hours to reconstruct Brandon's shoulder and arm. Four days later, Brandon was already feeling more confident. He said: "I feel much more like confident in myself now that it's gone... I feel like i'm going to gain it back and the cancer gone." He is now cancer-free.
This was an unprecedented collaboration: four surgical teams from three different hospitals covering head and neck, bone cancer, blood vessels and reconstruction. The hospital said the whole team had never worked together before, and there was no set plan for the surgery. The size of the team and the complexity of the procedure are unlikely to be repeated soon, but the expertise gave Brandon the strongest chance of returning to a normal life.
