Russian strikes continue across Ukraine, with a Kyiv school hit but no pupils hurt, after attacks killed civilians in Dnipro, Sumy and the capital.
The Full Story
A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.
Russian drone strikes have continued across Ukraine, killing civilians in Dnipro, Sumy and Kyiv and hitting a school in the capital. The school strike happened this morning while more than 100 children and 60 staff were inside. Part of the building was damaged and a fire broke out on an upper floor. President Zelensky said no one was injured because pupils and teachers had been in a shelter.
The wider wave of attacks has caused deaths and injuries in several cities. One report said six people died in Dnipro and others were killed in Sumy and Kyiv. Another overnight attack killed at least five people and injured 14 across Ukraine. Kyiv's mayor said at least seven people, including two children, were killed on Friday when a drone struck an office building, with dozens more injured. In Odesa, one man was killed when a drone hit his car. Three people were also killed in an office block in Dnipro, according to one account.
Kyiv has been hit repeatedly. A drone flew into the National Academy of Sciences around midday and set the three-storey building on fire. Staff were seen at windows trying to escape. One woman was confirmed dead, others were reported missing, and at least three people were injured. Less than two hours later, a medical school or medical centre in central Kyiv was hit and caught fire. Drones also struck apartment buildings, offices, petrol stations, a supermarket, warehouses, private houses and a data centre. Power was cut in parts of the city, and Ukraine's largest private energy company said it later restored supply to thousands of homes.
Russia's Defence Ministry said it hit a communications centre and energy facilities that support military production. Ukraine said it shot down five ballistic missiles and more than 150 drones in one attack. The strikes have included a new type of jet-propelled drone that Ukrainian forces are struggling to intercept. Moscow has been targeting petrol stations closer to the front line and has now hit them in Kyiv. Ukraine has also struck Russian oil refineries and a defence business. Russian officials in occupied Zaporizhzhia said a Ukrainian strike killed three volunteers delivering humanitarian aid.
President Zelensky has called for an energy ceasefire: Ukraine would stop hitting Russian refineries if Russia stopped hitting Ukrainian energy infrastructure. US President Donald Trump has pressed Zelensky to ease off refineries to calm global oil prices. Zelensky also said Trump had reassured him that the US would grant Ukraine a licence to build Patriot air defence systems, though Washington has not confirmed a final decision.
Officials and residents described a capital under almost constant alert. Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said the city is now Russia's main target and that the attacks take no account of residential or historic buildings. A local actor said there was barely a break between attacks, with air raid alerts lasting up to 13 hours and sounding as many as seven times a day at minimum. The government has advised people who can leave the capital to do so before winter.
The attacks have also affected energy markets beyond Ukraine. In the UK, diesel prices hit an all-time high of £1.99 a litre, with the war in Iran and Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities cited as factors disrupting global supplies.

Channel Perspectives
What each channel focused on, with key quotes.
Rolling bulletin format with short updates on casualties and infrastructure. It leads on the Kyiv petrol station and residential strikes, later adds the energy network attack and the school hit. It mixes Ukraine with UK domestic stories, so the war coverage is delivered in brief, headline-style bursts.
- “Two people have been killed and at least eight others injured after Russian drones struck two petrol stations in the Ukrainian capital Kiev during the morning rush hour.”
- “A school in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv was hit by a Russian drone this morning while more than 100 children and 60 staff were inside.”
- “President Zelensky said because students and teachers had been in a shelter, luckily no one had been injured.”
Longer-form package from Kyiv and Dnipro. It highlights the National Academy of Sciences strike, the Dnipro office block deaths and the new jet-propelled drones. It also brings in the political row over Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and Trump's pressure on Zelensky.
- “Russian drones have hit apartment buildings, offices, gas stations and data centres in the capital, Kyiv, along with Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences.”
- “Nowhere to hide also at this office block in Dnipro where three people were killed today.”
- “Moscow is hitting more civilian targets with a new type of jet-propelled drone which the Ukrainians are struggling to intercept.”
Broad news roundup that links the attacks to wider Ukraine diplomacy. It leads with sustained strikes across several cities and gives the most explicit Dnipro, Sumy and Kyiv casualty line. It also reports the Kyiv mayor's Friday death toll and Odesa, then moves to US and China diplomacy.
- “Ukraine has come under sustained attack from Russia with drone strikes on several cities. Six people died in Dnipro while others were killed in Sumy and the capital Kyiv, where Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences was hit, causing a huge fire.”
- “the mayor of Kyiv says at least seven people, including two children, were killed on Friday after a Russian drone struck an office building in the Ukrainian capital.”
- “Officials in Odesa said one man was killed there when a Russian drone hit his car.”
Live, on-scene reporting from central Kyiv. It focuses on the National Academy of Sciences fire and a second strike on a medical school, using correspondent Paul Adams and Mayor Klitschko to convey the sense of an escalating, round-the-clock campaign. A later segment adds overnight casualty and energy infrastructure figures.
- “a fresh wave of attacks has hit the capital, Kyiv. The targets included the country's National Academy of Sciences.”
- “He said this was an attack on all Ukrainians and he also said that Kyiv is now Russia's main target”
- “Less than two hours after that last strike, another one here right in the heart of Kyiv. This is a medical school and the fire here is just raging out of control.”
Analytical segment that places the Kyiv strike in a longer military and political context. It stresses Zelensky's call for allies to act and the mayor's claim that the capital is now Russia's principal target. Paul Adams compares the current danger with the first missile strikes in 2022.
- “a fresh wave of Russian airstrikes has hit the Ukrainian capital Kyiv including a drone attack on the country's famous National Academy of Sciences killing one person and leaving three more injured.”
- “They take nothing into account neither residential buildings nor historic buildings. The enemy's target was and remains every Ukrainian.”
- “Four years on, Kyiv is much much more dangerous than it ever was.”
Regional bulletin gives Ukraine only a brief headline within a packed domestic rundown. It frames the attacks as some of the heaviest bombing of the war but offers no details on Dnipro, Sumy or Kyiv casualties. Most of its airtime goes to RAF Fairford arrests, diesel prices and other UK stories.
- “Ukraine comes under sustained attack from Russia in some of the heaviest bombing of the war.”
Rolling news coverage that pairs overnight casualty figures with a focus on energy infrastructure and winter risk. It takes a live interview with a Kyiv resident, which shifts the emphasis to the strain of constant alerts and the difficulty of intercepting jet-powered drones. It also gives Russia's account of what it targeted.
- “At least five people have been killed and 14 injured across Ukraine in the latest Russian overnight attacks.”
- “Russia's Defence Ministry says it hit a communications center as well as energy facilities that support military production.”
- “Right now, living here feels like I live in a frontline city.”
